Related text in page: «Location Tongland near Kirkcudbright Kirkcudbrightshire Galloway Scotland Date of Photograph 31 March 1999 OS Grid Reference NX694535 Co ordinates 54°51 36 N 4°2 2 W Tongland is a small village in Glenken that formed around a medieval Premonstratensian monastery whose ruins remain During the First World War a factory was built at Tongland in which Galloway cars were made during 1921 and 1922 The village saw residential expansion in 2004 2006 Slightly downstream is Thomas Telford s 1806 single arch stone road bridge over the River Dee During the 1920 s plans were made to build hydroelectric power stations along the conterminous course of the rivers Ken and Dee and to draw supplementary water from the Doon catchment The primary strategy was not to electrify Galloway though that was a concomitant During the 1920 s The British National Grid was emplaced as a strategic resource The Grid is an interconnected network of high tension electric cables erected or on rare occasions buried to cover the entire UK It increases the nation s resilience to partial foreign occupation and supply bombing and also enables routine power supplies to be economically optimized across the country The especial merits of the Galloway scheme were twofold As a hydro contribution it could be switched in and out of The Grid within minutes to absorb surge demands unlike the highly inertial steam stations that take hours to reach operating speed and furthermore whilst the Scottish winter is cold it is also wet so that the season of highest demand might coincide with that of most copious water supply Parliament found such ideas compelling and on 10th May 1929 passed The Galloway Water Power Act The first phase of the scheme was to include five power stations and was designed by William McLellan of the consultancy partnership Merz and McLellan From the outset special consideration was given to the environmental impact of the scheme in an important fishing resort area The concrete arch dams were styled as unobtrus»
